Greece is a country fully compliant with European road safety rules. Travelers should be aware that they must comply with the road traffic rules set in the country they are visiting and pay the fines that may be imposed by the authorities in case of violations. The island of Paros is a destination for rest and tranquility and the safety of all of us is a priority. For this reason the rules on the island of Paros are strict with constant checks of compliance by the authorities and heavy fines. Our company DK rentals recommends that you pay attention to the following violations that are often recorded on our island by the Hellenic Police and can lead to life threatening accidents.

Driving without a helmet

One of the most common violations is that motorcycle or quad / atv drivers do not wear helmets. This results in endangering their physical safety and also facing heavy fines. The law in force in Greece says that if the police authorities find a motorcycle or quad / atv driver without a helmet, they will revoke his license for 3 months and impose a significant fine. The law applies to all travelers regardless of their country of origin and then the driver involved must contact the authorities following the three months so that they can send the license to their place of residence. If a passenger is found without a helmet then a fine is imposed on both the driver for negligence and on the passenger. In any case, the fine must be paid to the relevant Greek authority within 30 days, otherwise it will be sent to the competent authority of the country of the citizen concerned.

Driving without a seatbelt

Another common violation is driving without a seatbelt. In this case, those involved should be aware that the competent authorities have the right to impose a fine of €350 and take away their driving license for 10 days.

Driving under the influence of alcohol

The most important and perhaps the most severe penalty is imposed in the case of driving after consuming alcohol. The authorities first subject the driver to a breath test and in case of violation of the consumption limits they have the right to withdraw the driving license and impose a heavy fine. In particular, if the police detect that you are driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.25 to 0.40 milligrams per liter of inhaled air, the fine is 200 euros. If you drive under the influence of alcohol with a concentration of more than 0.40 to 0.60 milligrams per liter of inhaled air, the fine is 700 euros and in addition the vehicle must be immobilized and your driving license revoked for 90 days. Driving under the influence of alcohol over 0.60 milligrams per liter of inhaled air is punishable by a fine of 1,200 euros, 2 months in prison, withdrawal of the driving license and vehicle registration plates for 6 months.

Ensuring safe driving on the roads is everyone’s responsibility and the rules must be followed without exception. Our attention to the above violations while driving is an important prerequisite for the safety of everyone.
